ANECC is a conservation learning center developed to support the preservation of the Sumatran Elephant through education, research, capacity building, and partnerships.
ANECC is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Region I Extension and Human Resources Development Center and Yayasan Persamuhan Bodhicitta Mandala Medan for the development of Sumatran Elephant conservation in the Aek Nauli Special-Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK), North Sumatra.
As a conservation learning center, ANECC does not only focus on elephant management, but also promotes knowledge development, human resource capacity building, and community involvement in supporting the preservation of Indonesia’s biodiversity.
KHDTK Aek Nauli
KHDTK Aek Nauli is a forest area of approximately 2,400 hectares with natural vegetation, water sources, and available feed that supports the management of Sumatran Elephants.
This area functions as a center for education, research, scientific development, and training in forestry and conservation. Its well-preserved forest landscape makes KHDTK Aek Nauli an ideal location for developing experience-based conservation learning.
ANECC is located within this area and makes use of its natural potential as a learning space to introduce the relationship between wildlife, forest ecosystems, and people.
Why the Sumatran Elephant?
The Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is an endemic species of Sumatra Island that plays an important role in maintaining the balance of the forest ecosystem. As a natural seed disperser, elephants help regenerate various plant species that are part of the tropical forest ecosystem.
However, the Sumatran Elephant population continues to face various threats, such as habitat loss, area fragmentation, and human-wildlife conflict.
Through ANECC, the public is invited to understand the importance of Sumatran Elephant conservation as part of efforts to maintain forest sustainability and Indonesia’s biodiversity.
