Meet the Elephant & Its Mahout

Bongkar is an adult male Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 46 years old, originating from Palembang, South Sumatra. In 2025, he became part of the Aek Nauli Elephant Conservation Camp (ANECC) family after previously being cared for at Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary. Weighing approximately 2,506 kilograms, Bongkar is one of the largest elephants at ANECC. He is cared for daily by his primary mahout, Risnan, together with assistant mahout Erwan, who ensure his health, wellbeing, and daily care. As one of ANECC's senior elephants, Bongkar plays an important role in conservation education, helping visitors learn more about the Sumatran Elephant and the importance of protecting its natural habitat.

Lubing (Luis Figo / Figo)

Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) Lubing, affectionately known as Luis Figo or Figo, is a male Sumatran Elephant born on 26 May 2006. He originated from the Holiday Resort Elephant Training Centre in South Labuhanbatu and joined ANECC in 2017 at approximately 11 years of age.

With an approximate body weight of 2,435 kilograms and a shoulder height of around 2.1 metres, Figo is currently in his productive adult stage and actively participates in various elephant management programmes at ANECC. He is cared for and accompanied daily by his mahout, Ilham Pasaribu.

Figo serves as one of ANECC’s conservation ambassadors, helping visitors develop a deeper understanding of Sumatran Elephant behaviour, biology, and conservation through meaningful and interactive learning experiences.

Ester Juwita is a female Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 46 years old. She originated from Palembang, South Sumatra, and joined ANECC in 2017 after previously being cared for at the Holiday Resort Elephant Training Centre in South Labuhanbatu. With an approximate body weight of 2,416 kilograms, Ester remains in good health and is accompanied daily by her mahout, Yopi Widianto. As one of the senior elephants at ANECC, Ester plays an important role in supporting conservation education activities while reminding visitors of the importance of protecting and ensuring the long-term survival of Sumatran Elephants in the wild.

Siti is a female Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 47 years old, making her one of the oldest elephants at ANECC. She originated from Palembang and became part of ANECC in 2017. With an approximate body weight of 2,245 kilograms, Siti remains in good health and is cared for by her mahout, Muhammad Irfansyah. Her life experience makes Siti an important part of ANECC's conservation education programmes, helping visitors understand Sumatran Elephant behaviour, natural history, and the challenges faced by this species in its natural habitat.

Pini Alfionita, affectionately known as Pini, is a female Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 36 years old. She originated from the Sosa area and joined ANECC in 2017 after previously being cared for at the Holiday Resort Elephant Training Centre in South Labuhanbatu. Weighing approximately 1,957 kilograms, Pini is accompanied daily by her mahout, Aidil Adha. Pini contributes to ANECC's conservation education efforts by helping visitors develop a greater appreciation of Sumatran Elephants and the importance of protecting their forest habitats.

Dini is a female Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 38 years old. She originated from Palembang and joined ANECC in 2023 after previously receiving care at Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary. With an approximate body weight of 1,974 kilograms, Dini is cared for by her mahout, Bayu Irawan, with support from assistant mahout Pria Nanda. Her presence strengthens ANECC's commitment to conservation, education, and public awareness initiatives aimed at highlighting the importance of protecting Sumatran Elephants and their natural habitats.

Chai Chilia, affectionately known as Chai, is a female Sumatran Elephant estimated to be 39 years old. She originated from Palembang and became part of the ANECC family in 2025 after previously being cared for at Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary. Weighing approximately 2,283 kilograms, Chai is accompanied by her mahout, Edi Pranata, who supports her daily care and management. Through conservation education and interpretation programmes, Chai helps create meaningful connections between visitors and the story of Sumatran Elephants. Her presence encourages greater understanding of the importance of protecting forests as vital habitats for a species currently classified as Critically Endangered.
